The Battlefield series has been around for nearly 20 years, and with that comes an incredible history, and the newest announcement plays tribute to that.

Battlefield Portal is a new sandbox custom mode where you can mix content from not only Battlefield 2042, but also 3 of the most popular Battlefield games. Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3. Mixing and matching maps, weapons, vehicles and more from all 4 games. Beyond that, you will also be able to use the classes from those three games, even though Battlefield 2042 does not use a class system. All classes, and factions return.

Alongside all maps in 2042, they have confirmed the mode will launch with 6 classic maps, 2 from each game. With more to be added post launch. Specifically

Battle Of The Bulge (Battlefield 1942)

El Alamein (Battlefield 1942)

Arica Harbor (Battlefield: Bad Company 2)

Valparaiso  (Battlefield: Bad Company 2)

Caspian Border (Battlefield 3)

Noshahr Canals (Battlefield 3)

And these aren’t just ports of old files, each map has been fully remade with the modern frostbite engine.

Alongside that, they have confirmed that there will be over 40 returning weapons, including such classics as the M1 Garand, Panzerschreck, G3, and M416.

A number of classic vehicles return as well, over 40, allowing situations such as a dogfight between a modern fighter jet and a WWII era spitfire.

7 classic factions are playable in Battlefield Portal, alongside the specialists from 2042, including 1942 UK, US, and Germany, and the versions of the US and russia from Bad Company 2. And they can be mixed and matched at your discretion.

Battlefield Portal is not just some bonus side mode, but is equal as any other part of the game, XP you earn in portal is counted just the same, and any new content added to 2042 will be added to portal as well.

Beyond that, you can customize the game itself, such as restricting what weapons you can use, either overall or per team, number of players per team, (an example they gave was 10 players with guns vs 50 players with only knives) victory conditions,  to even fundamental gameplay mechanics, such as disabling sprinting, aiming down sights, health regeneration, etc. And any creation you make can be shared online, or you can try other players gameplay concepts and ideas.

Portal is one of the 3 core experiences in 2042, alongside all out warfare, which is normal battlefield gameplay, and a new mode called Hazard Zone, of which we know nothing yet.

Portal will be available day one. So as soon as the game launches on October 22, 2021, you can immediately fight in battle across multiple eras of battlefield history, having WWII era soldiers fighting alongside futuristic drones and modern aircraft. With up to 128 players on current-gen consoles and PCs.
