Thanks to, Hyoung Nam, a Senior Concept Artist at Naughty Dog, we may have ourselves a peek at what the studio is working on next.
Nam, has posted 3 new pieces of concept art, each distinctly rooted in fantasy and could be an indication of the direction Naughty Dog decides to take their next big IP.
Directly from Nam’s art station, we have a woman donned in what appears to be thick furs, multiple layers and leather, possibly reminiscent of Scandinavian garbs. She’s sitting on top of what looks like a dragon she recently defeated in combat.
Next, we have a woman with bright green eyes, maybe an indication of some sort of magic, as Nam really made it a point to make the eyes stand out. She wears, what appears to be, bones and several charms around her neck, left shoulder and head.
Lastly, we have a shaman like character, donning a ram’s skull, as well as a skull atop her staff. If this game is truly norse based, we can expect this woman to play the role of a Seer, more than likely.
Together, these three make up, what Nam calls, “The Women of the North.” Which, would seem to suggest these characters maybe from the Scandinavian region? Coupled with this, Nam also captions the post with a sly little tease that reads:
“Inspire from new game. You know what I’m talking about…”
So, this points to either one of two things. Naughty Dog’s next project, will be a fantasy-themed game, or the game has some sort of tribalistic, fantasy-like aspect that’s strong enough to inspire Nam to create these pieces. Personally, I’m crossing my fingers for the former rather than the latter, but whether or not the team at Naughty Dog is, for a fact, creating a fantasy-themed game, is still up in the air.
I think, at the very least, we can find solace in knowing, that Naughty Dog is no stranger to branching out and stretching their creative legs. Since Crash, Naughty Dog has continually pushed themselves to try something new, seemingly with each console generation.
Again, this artwork may never escape the conceptual phase, as projects of this scale are always subject to change. But, purely based off of these pieces, I think it’s safe to assume that Naughty Dog, at the very least, is working on a new IP. Whether or not it does end up to be some grounded, fantasy-themed adventure, is something we will have to wait to see.
