The bow and arrow. It’s been an iconic part for characters from stories to movies. Characters like Hawkeye from The Avengers, Daryl with his crossbow from The Walking Dead, Robin Hood Men in Tights to Topper Harley from Hot Shots all have used a bow and arrow that helps bring that character to life. But do Developer Blueteak show us how important the bow and arrows help bring the immersion to our characters in Virtual Reality? Let’s find out with QuiVR for the PlayStation VR.

The one thing you will notice about when you start QuiVR is the calibrate screen. I wanted to point this out first as it is important to understand what is going on here. When I first started to play QuiVR, I didn’t hold the Move controllers straight up and as a result, I was shorter in the game and it just felt off and the timing of my shooting wasn’t there.

But when I went back in and correctly calibrated my Move controllers for QuiVR, the results were like they should be, normal height and my aiming and tracking were very much improved.

Make sure you calibrate for the best experience possible.

Now that we have that out of the way and you have been properly calibrated, you are aware of your surroundings, and your Move controllers have been charged, it’s time to really get into QuiVR. In QuiVR, you will be firing arrows at enemies as they are trying to reach the gate. So it is your job to protect your keep from the enemies that want to attack and disrupt your peace. Each enemy that you kill adds to the out area of an orb that once is completed, will allow you to move on to the next round.

But what I like is how you have the option to get the arrows from either your back or your hip. I went traditional reaching for an arrow from my back to pull back and let it go. But standing in one place firing arrows might be fun for some, but others might take that shot from different vantage points that are represented by blue targets that you will need to shoot in order to reach that point and QuiVr will offer a variety of spots to shoot from. This really helps improve the timing of your shot when you are high above the ground and trying to stop the enemies from reaching the gate.

I will say that with QuiVr, do not take the aiming for granted. You will need to put in the work to get your timing down. Developer Blueteak has done an excellent job of getting the bow and arrow tracking aspect down to a science. It’s really just satisfying to reach for that arrow to then have it appear before you and just fire away. But I know I briefly went over what you do in QuiVr, but I wanted to at least explain the calibration portion and go over how satisfying it is once everyone clicks. But let’s get into what all you can do.

Once I was in the main hub of sorts, to my left I saw the leaderboards and automatically put a smile on my face. To see the list of all those who did their best and have their names where all who entered QuiVr would see. I could also go into my own shop where items that I unlock such as masks and gloves, for example, would appear. Keeping in mind that you don’t have to equip what you unlock then as you can wait to get to your shop to equip the items. There is also target practice that has its own separate leaderboards which I thought was a nice touch. Shooting random targets in a certain amount of time while trying to get the most points is how you get up on the boards. I like how it shows the highest scores for the week as that gives you another reason to come back and make sure your skills are up to where they should be and you expect them to be. But being able to get on the board twice, even though it was the last place, was still nice to see.

But once you think you have had enough target practice, it’s time to decide how you want to play the game. You can go at it all alone and shoot until your hearts content at the enemies coming towards your gate like they own the place and trying to reach that next level only to realize that the further you go and no matter how awesome your shooting is, it’s when more of the enemies come at you in different sizes from on the ground to flying and attacking your gate that way. Hitting the enemies can either be straight on or the ones that you can shoot their weapons that will them slow them down to make it hopefully an easier target for you.

But where QuiVr might be the most fun is when you add up to 3 other players to the mix. But don’t feel bad being the new player as your aiming and timing will just get better the more you play. Plus the more people you have help, hopefully, it will be a little easier to take out the bosses. But as fun, as it is seeing your single name on the leaderboards, I really like how the developer made it a group for the leaderboards depending on how many where in your group.

There are some things I wish were added. For one, a pro patch. QuiVr would really shine in the graphical department, but few times the enemies that were in a distance were just a little tough to make out at times. I am not saying this was ongoing, but at times things were just a tad difficult to make out and when you are trying to shoot the enemies from long distances, it helps to be able to make them out. I would like to see an option for smooth turning as it would just help for the times the enemies get past you and that one second could make a difference in the enemy reaching the gate. And finally, I would love there to be a multiplayer mode where we could have 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, and 4 vs 4 deathmatches or even freeze tag would be awesome and just add to the fun. Yes, that is wishful thinking, but deathmatch by fire or ones that shoot out a net to then trap the other person to electrify them does sound pretty fun.

I like how you can upgrade your armor and weapons and I do like that when enemies drop certain power-ups, you can shoot them to get limited powerful arrows (I mean fire arrows are always awesome) and love the leaderboards aspect in both practice, single, and multiplayer modes as it gives a reason to come back. Also, when you join in multiplayer, you can either invite your friends or just have random players that will show up in your game after you already started it. But it’s when everyone is laughing and having a good time and you never know who may join and when everyone is laughing have fun is when QuiVr becomes a really good time.

QuiVr is fun to play in single player, but steps up that fun when others are shooting along with you, but is a blast to play when you and the other players start to click and just joke around and have some fun. And as in life regardless if it is at work or at home, QuiVr reminds us that like in life, that we are all trying to climb that leaderboard of successes in our professional and personal lives the best way we can.
