I want you to stop what you are doing and take what I am about to say to heart. Think about a time when you were a child and how innocent things were. If you happen to have a child now, take a moment to look at things through their eyes. Does either of these put a smile on your face? Is it a time you wish you could go back to or make last forever? Would you do anything to protect that innocence? Now, of course, you would probably say yes to any of these, but what if for an instance all that innocence was taken away? What if the game changed and your worst fear became your reality, what would you do? Does Publisher Daedalic Entertainment and Developer Tessera Studios allow you to feel helpless and be part of the game or will it change the way you look at greed and life? Let’s find out with Intruders: Hide and Seek for the PlayStation VR.

Intruders: Hide and Seek has you playing Ben Richter who is a little boy who’s Father, at least when being introduced to him almost feels like he is part of a secretive operation where you don’t know exactly what he does, but you know it’s important because both of your parents said it was and you really have no other reason not to believe them. So I am going to pretend that he is part of something greater like Area 51 (not really) and we finally get to take that road trip that he has been promising for who knows how long and I am sure all will be OK out in these woods.

I am going to say this up front that I love it when a story has a twist and because of the twist that is involved here and the subject matter, I am going to be very careful of not giving away anything as I will get to more on this a little later. With that, grab your DualShock 4 controller and let’s continue.

The story is of course intruders have broken into your home. And this home is not your ordinary get away for a few days type of home. So any attempt to break in would take the skills and mindset of some very talented people. In fact, here, there are three individuals that are after something and this something, in essence, is part of the greater good depending on how you look at it. But in order to plan the attack, everything has to be perfect. From the weather to the time of day and that is what we have here. Your goal is to survive the night and not get caught. All this sounds simple, but when that innocence is taken away, things can start to change and something inside can make you see and unleash something from within that you never thought was there.

Throughout the night with the three intruders lurking around in this game of hide and seek, you have to be able to sneak around and not get detected. As you are moving throughout the house, you will need to listen to clues that your sister is giving you. In one part, your sister Irene needs her medication and it will be up to you try and sneak to her room to get it in the dark. Yes, you do have a flashlight, but you might want to be careful where you shine it. But just as you think you almost had her medication, one of the intruders grabs it, so then you must try and follow him to get the medication without getting caught. There were times I was so sure I was so quiet that the intruders were alerted and I will say if they catch you, it’s not pretty.

But as the title states in Intruders: Hide and Seek, you will have places you can fit into and hide. But it’s the part that Tessera Studios has done very well here in that capturing and striking the fear into a small child while trying not to get caught, but not even realizing that he has to grow to become the hero everyone needs.

As you start to listen to what the intruders say in the conversation and learn why they are there, things start to become a little more clearer. Things you thought you knew based on what you were told may not be what it seems or maybe what should be what it seems is actually the fact here and the motivation behind what is hidden is could be the real reason why the situation has escalated to what it is now. This is something that I am going to leave up to you to discover.

Let’s talk about the graphics for a moment. Some may feel that the character models may not be the best that they could be early on in the game and I will say that sitting in the backseat of the car and looking at the mother, that the jaw line seemed a little off, but I didn’t focus on it too long. But things did seem to pick up once you start to meet the intruders with the lighting that was used. Outside in the woods, I was more focused on the story itself then anything else.

The sound is very well done here. I really love how the music really intensifies as you are trying to hide and not get caught. Hearing the rain as you are trying to sneak around with just enough light presented and when you hear the voices of the intruders all around you, there are times where you are not sure where they are and you may just need to hide quickly just to make sure things don’t get out of hand.

Intruders: Hide and Seek gameplay

Earlier I talked about a subject matter and without trying to give too much away, there is a part where what could happen to the ones that you love is something that no person, especially through the eyes of a child, should never have to witness. After it was over, I had to sit back and figure out how I would truly write this. Was I going to defend the reason why or was I going to justify the cause? It took an emotional side of me and almost started to play with my emotions like they were strings on a violin. It’s one of those times that after it is done that you look at your child and/or partner and you give them the biggest hug or you pick up that phone and tell your parents to thank you for all that they have done and be thankful for what is and not what could have been. That’s the power of Virtual Reality. It’s a powerful tool that can play on those emotions or it can bring out happiness from an experience that we may have forgotten from when we were the children playing and it brings it to a new level never thought possible.
