PlayStation has been on a roll the past two years, patenting potential new technology left and right. If isn’t several different versions of new PSVR controls, we have the possibility of backwards compatibility on the PS5. This newly discovered patent could be giving us the first look at the DualShock 5.

How would you feel about the DS5 having a TOUCHSCREEN in the middle of it?? Here’s the descriptive of their idea.

A controller for interfacing wirelessly with a computing device is provided, including the following: a housing defined by a main body, a first extension extending from a first end of the main body, and a second extension extending from a second end of the main body, the first extension and the second extension for holding by a first hand and a second hand of a user, respectively; a touchscreen defined along the top surface of the main body between the first extension and the second extension; a first set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the first extension and on a first side of the touchscreen; and a second set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the second extension and on a second side of the touchscreen.

When it comes down to it, Sony patents all kinds of crazy ideas that never come to fruition and this could be another one of them. Another thing I worry about is if developers would actually use it? How many games use the touchpad for more than easy map access? How many games use the motion control abilities? The answer is unfortunately not many. Another danger in my opinion would be how this might impact the controller’s battery life. The DualShock 4 already doesn’t last as long due to the controller’s light bar. Then again, it could be a rather nice addition to the next DualShock as long as Sony get devs on board to use it properly.

What do you think, Brah? Is this the future of the DualShock or another idea never to be used? Let us know in the comments below!
