An uproar ensued during E3 2018 regarding cross-play when Fortnite Battle Royale launched on the Nintendo Switch. Gamers who had originally created FN accounts on the PS4 were locked out of their progress and any microtransactions they might have made. The Gaming nation was irate.

Sony issued a statement annnnd it wasn’t what people wanted to hear. Major backlash over their current state of mind regarding cross-play continues on social media and on gaming websites.

Now Sony has issued another statement, this time from Shawn Layden, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios. Shawn was asked about the possibility of cross-play in the future by Eurogamer, Shawn’s answer was much better (and maybe even a bit optimistic?) than the generic PR statement issued originally:

We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.

While I do think Sony will ‘unlock’ player’s Epic accounts, I’m not entirely sure they will allow cross-play with the other two major consoles anytime soon.

What do you think, Brah? Will Sony ever let cross-play with other consoles? Or will we be waiting for it along with PSN name changes?
