As we are nearing the holidays and with Christmas like a week away, we might start thinking about being outside in the sun and just playing. But what if you are in a part of the world that is getting a blizzard and the snow and ice just will not stop? What about parts of the world where it may be Summertime, but it’s just too hot to go outside? What if you really want to be that master of kite tricks and stunts at the beach, city or on top of mountains, well, the great people at Handy-Games have got you covered with Stunt Kite Masters VR for the PlayStation VR.

When I first heard about Stunt Kite Masters VR was coming to PlayStation VR I thought that would be pretty cool, but I kept thinking about the possibilities and what would be flying a kite in VR bring to the virtual table. Then I started it up and instantly was on the beach and seeing the ocean with a sailboat and this calm and peaceful feeling came over as if I was all alone on the beach. Then before I knew it an hour passed by and I was happy about it and this is a good thing.

In Stunt Kite Masters VR you have the choice to use the Dual Shock 4 or the two Move Controllers. If you use the Dual Shock 4, you have two choices, motion or using the analog sticks. Either way, works very well, to be honest. But for my first attempt I with the Move Controllers as to me it seemed to give that more freedom and felt more realistic as the Move Controllers are represented by handles and you are holding each one independent of each other. The Move buttons allow you to ascend and descend the strings so you can go higher and lower. Move the left and right in opposite directions allows you to turn. It does take a little bit to get used to it, but once you do, it’s a blast.

There are two modes to select from, KIte Snake and Outrun. In Kite Snake, your object is to fly your kite and collect the stars in a snake like formation. This mode really helps you to get used to the controls and I kept coming back to try and beat my score.

In Outrun, you are flying your kite while avoiding RC planes. Yes, RC planes are trying to take your kite out. The longer you stay up in the air, the more RC planes come in. So it’s starting to be a real cat and mouse game that I found to have that special flavor on top of an already simple yet fun game. Even if an RC plane does not hit you, if your kite hits the ground it’s over. It’s based on time and how long you have your kite out is what counts.

Even though there is no multiplayer and this doesn’t really need it, there are leaderboards that I truly appreciate. So it does give you that want…that need to come back and try to improve your score and get your name as close to the top as possible and for that, I do appreciate it.

There are three different locations to select from. The Beach, The City, and The Mountains. On The Beach location, it looks and like you are on the beach with the sand and the ocean and the rocks. The sailboat is a nice touch. It would have been really awesome if there would have been some dolphins or whales coming out of the ocean to give this scene just a little bit more life, but really if you want to relax this is the place to start.

On The City location, you are on top of a building at night, flying a kite, in the rain. Yes, rain and yes at night. This is where it starts to add to not only the normality but looking down and seeing the cars move and thinking if you were to fall down, not even Spider-Man would be able to save you. But when you play Outrun in this scene it really adds to it. RC planes at night, in the rain on top of a building with traffic moving below. At one point there was a helicopter flying around with a spotlight and was trying to make my kite hit it. And yes you can actually hit the helicopter with your kite or even fly your kite over the ledge and bring it back up. It’s these little things that add to this.

And on The Mountain location, you are of course on top of a mountain while it’s snowing. This is also a nice change of pace as you see the clouds moving by. You really get a feel of how windy it is on top of the mountain as the clouds move at a pretty good speed. Looking around there is also a bridge. I would have loved to see some people cross the bridge or maybe see a Yetti come up and throw snowballs or attempt to try and knock down your kite. It doesn’t need it, but I know I would be laughing out loud and it would give that added difficulty mix.

Adding to the fun is the ability to unlock new kites by completing missions. Of course, some can be easy and some more difficult. But I do appreciate how each unlockable kite brings a new life to the game. Nothing like a shark kite while you are at the ocean or even a ufo kite while at night. Again, it’s these little things that are a nice touch.

I also appreciate the way we have the option that if we just wanted to hear the wind at the beach that you can turn the music off. Not saying the music that is in the game is bad in any way (I like the music), but it’s nice that there are options. For a real added bonus, start playing Let’s Go Fly A Kite from Mary Poppins and it’s a whole new immersion level. Stunt Kite Masters VR brings something new to VR and it works here. Is everyone wanting to go fly a kite…maybe. But if you just want to have some fun and if you can appreciate what is presented, you will have a good time.
