Last week Sony held an event with members of the press, getting all the finicial mumbo jumbo out of the way so that during their E3 showcase. It’ll be nothing but GAMES, GAMES, GAMES.
In an interview with Time, PlayStation Europe Boss Jim Ryan was asked about BC for the PS4 and his answer was quite the head scratcher.
When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?
Ok, so perhaps fan didn’t question his sanity, but maybe we questioned his reasoning. He’s an Exec. He wants to sells the most copies of their current games and consoles. What has been one of the most popular features and selling points for the Xbox One is the fact that you can play a ton of 360 games on it.
So when he said that it isn’t “Used much”?? Uh, Jim! Call of Duty: Black Ops II CHARTED in the NPD’s last month thanks to the ability to play it on the Xbox One! A game from five years ago, Brah! There’s certainly people who still use it!
Sure. The PS4 has PS Now, which grants you the ability to stream over 450 games.. in certain regions of the world. And only if your connection allows you. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly a cool feature, yet it cost extra money and the image quality is lacking at times. It is NOT the answer to BC.
I don’t know. Instead of telling me I don’t want or play my older games, why not let gamers have the choice to play them. Yes, there is some major issues keeping us from playing PS3 games on the PS4, but what’s the issue with PS1 and PS2 games?? The fact they would rather sell us a PS2 on PS4 classic port of the same games we already own?
Backwards compatibility isn’t the biggest deal to me, since I own my older PlayStation consoles, but when an Exec for PlayStation says something so dumbfounding, it’s hard not to be critical of it.
How do you feel about BC? Is it a shame that Sony doesn’t focus on it more or do you have too many current generation games to play?
