You have to give it to Naughty Dog. Once they start a franchise, they give it their best. From Crash Bandicoot (Crash 1-3, Crash Team Racing) to Jak & Daxter (J & D 1-3, Jak X Racing) to Uncharted (UC 1-4, Lost Legacy) and finally to The Last of Us. Over the past 20 years they have consistently delievered some of the best PlayStation games on the market.
However, with each new generation, they’ve introduced a new IP and move on from the old one. This tradition looks to continue, as Naughty Dog Co-President Evan Wells told Game Informer in an interview, that the time has come for his team to look beyond the Uncharted series after Uncharted Lost Legacy.
I would say that Naughty Dog doing an Uncharted after this is unlikely. I would never say never, but we’ve got The Last of Us Part II on our plates and there’s so much other stuff that [we want to explore]. It’d be hard. If we magically had that two-team, three-team studio, sure – it’d be great to keep doing it. We really love the franchise, but the studio has limited resources and lots of other ideas. I’d say the likelihood is low.
‘Never say never’ when it comes to sequels to your favorite games. But this is a perfect time to move on. Nathan Drake lived happily ever after. Why ruin that fantastic ending? Now don’t get me wrong, you get one incredible idea and BOOM!!!! You have that itch again. It’s just fans of Naughty Dog know the teams create some of them best content around. Sony gives them complete freedom and they exercise freedom that with every release.
While Drake and family relax in paradise, the teams at Naughty Dog are hard at work on Uncharted Lost Legacy and The Last of Us: Part II. Who knows what the future holds for them after that, but I can’t wait to find out!
Uncharted Lost Legacy hits later this year.
